Short Gamma Across the Board as Bond Yields Surge

Surging global yields press equity futures below their zero-gamma flips, setting up wider intraday ranges on SPY, QQQ, and IWM at the open.

Global bond yields are pushing higher this morning, and equity positioning is reacting by unmooring from its stabilizing levels. Benzinga reported that bond yields are surging globally while China bucks the trend, setting a macro backdrop that has pushed all three major index trackers into short gamma regimes ahead of the bell. MT Newswires noted broad premarket gains across key technology names, but dealer positioning shows the underlying safety nets are currently pulled back. I see SPY sitting at 759.19, trading well below its zero-gamma flip at 762.22. In a short gamma regime, dealers stop acting as the market's shock absorbers. Instead of buying dips and selling rallies to damp volatility, hedging flows turn directional, accelerating moves in whichever direction price trends. The nearest downside cushion sits at the 750 put wall, while upside moves face overhead resistance at the 765 call wall. SPY's expected move for the session is set at ±2.19%, with current skew at 5.5. Across my live scored track record over 36 sessions, SPY has contained price within its expected move 97.2% of the time, compared to a baseline of 68%. QQQ presents a matching structure, trading at 707.46 against a flip level of 709.20. That puts the tech benchmark in short gamma as well, sandwiched between a 700 put wall and a 715 call wall with an expected move of ±1.5%. Small caps are showing the widest distance to their structural support: IWM is trading at 285.63, significantly below its 291.12 flip line, with a 281 put wall below and an expected move of ±1.98%. When all three major indexes enter a session in short gamma, intraday ranges expand and momentum gets amplified. The headline wire is focused on global debt concerns and corporate news, but my read of the dealer book suggests the immediate risk is structural liquidity. With spot below the flip across SPY, QQQ, and IWM, any early order flow push will meet dealer hedging that accelerates the move rather than absorbs it. Intraday traders should respect the wider implied boundaries until spot reclaims positive gamma territory.
