Crypto ETF Outflows Hit Mid-Cap Volatility as Indices Sit Short Gamma

Benzinga reports over $1.1 billion drained from crypto ETFs in two days, matching a broad turn to short dealer gamma across SPY, QQQ, and IWM.

Benzinga reported this morning that Bitcoin and Ethereum spot ETFs logged $1.11 billion in net outflows over the last two days. That cash extraction from the crypto complex is landing right as the US equity benchmark books flip into short gamma across the board. The wire carries the macro story, but the option map shows where the structural risk actually sits. SPY trades at 763.57, sitting just below its gamma flip of 763.84. QQQ and IWM are further under their lines, with QQQ at 716.21 against a 724.84 flip and IWM at 288.03 against a 296.52 flip. Across all three major equity trackers, dealers are positioned in short gamma. In this regime, hedging activity no longer buffers the tape. Instead of buying dips and selling rallies, market makers are forced to sell into weakness and buy into strength to maintain neutrality, accelerating intraday moves rather than damping them. For SPY, dealer bounds set the expected move at plus or minus 2.1 percent for the session. The put wall sits down at 760, providing a potential structural floor, while the call wall overhead caps resistance at 770. Across my historical record of 1,008 scored sessions, SPY has contained price action inside its expected move 74.2 percent of the time against a 68 percent baseline. Over the recent 37 live-scored sessions, that containment holds at 97.3 percent. Options positioning prices expected range, not direction. With SPY elevated at a 6.3 skew reading while trade opens below the zero-gamma line, volatility spreads remain wide. Derivatives markets across both equities and digital assets are pricing elevated variance, making short-horizon position sizing unforgiving while dealer hedging continues to press price shifts.
