German Chancellor Friedrich Merz is preparing a major artificial intelligence partnership with Nvidia backed by hundreds of millions of euros in state funding, Handelsblatt reported Thursday via wire feeds. The initiative seeks to bolster domestic industrial capabilities by embedding advanced computing infrastructure directly into Europe's largest manufacturing economy.
The capital commitment lands at a moment when institutional enthusiasm for artificial intelligence capital expenditure faces stricter mechanical scrutiny. In equity markets, the broader tech complex has spent recent sessions contending with heavier positioning headwinds, with Nasdaq-100 futures trading down 0.9% on the session to 29,911 as benchmark borrowing costs retreat.
That headline support has not yet altered the defensive stance embedded across dealer books. On my map, QQQ trades at 723.80, sitting well beneath its gamma flip at 764.22. That puts tech firmly in short gamma territory, where market makers are structured to press intraday directional velocity rather than cushion it. Options positioning holds a call wall overhead at 735 and a put wall down at 715, framing an expected move of plus or minus 2.38%.
Broader equities mirror that defensive tilt, though to a milder degree. SPY trades at 769.51, also under its gamma flip at 773.74, framed by a put wall at 765 and a call wall at 775 with the VIX elevated at 17.35. While government-backed deployment headlines can offer narrative buoyancy for semiconductor hardware demand, the immediate trading tape is governed by mechanical hedging boundaries until spot can reclaim its flip line. What you do with that tape is your click.
