The call wall is the strike above spot with the heaviest call-gamma concentration — the level price tends to stall and pin at. But it's built from open interest, and open interest changes during the day. When it changes enough, the wall migrates.
How the ceiling moves up
If SPY grinds toward the call wall and traders start buying calls at the next strike up — chasing continuation — gamma builds higher, and the largest concentration can shift to that higher strike. The wall that was resistance at, say, 745 effectively relocates to 747. The ceiling didn't break; it moved, and price now has room to keep grinding toward the new one.
A migrating call wall is the difference between “resistance ahead” and “the resistance just stepped back”, and only a live map shows it.
Why it's a bullish tell
Migration reflects real demand building at higher strikes. A call wall that steps up as price approaches is the book confirming the move rather than capping it — often a cleaner continuation signal than the grind itself. Contrast that with a wall that holds firmly, which is your cue to expect a stall or fade.
Reading it in practice
You can only see migration on a live-updated dealer map — a wall computed at the open and never refreshed will look static and mislead you into fading strength that the book is actually supporting. Watch whether the wall holds, migrates up, or breaks outright; each means something different. NoVo recomputes the walls through the session so a moving ceiling shows up as it happens, not after.
