Can I Get Assigned on a Long Option? (No — Here's Why)
“Assignment” sounds scary, and new traders often worry about it on trades where it simply can't happen. Here's the clear rule that puts the worry to rest.
Can you get assigned on a long option (one you bought)? No. Assignment only happens to option sellers, not buyers. If you bought (are long) a call or put, you can never be assigned — you hold the right, not the obligation. Here's why that's a clean, absolute rule.
Rights vs. obligations
When you buy an option, you own a right: the right to exercise if you choose. You're in control — nothing can be forced on you. When you sell (write) an option, you take on an obligation: if the buyer exercises, you can be assigned — forced to deliver. Assignment is the seller's risk, the mirror of the buyer's right. Since a long position is a right, not an obligation, there's nothing to assign to you.
Buyers hold rights; sellers hold obligations. Assignment is a seller's problem — if you bought the option, it's simply not on your list of things to worry about.
The quick takeaway
Long options can't be assigned — assignment is only for sellers. As an option buyer, your risks are the premium and (if you hold ITM to expiration) exercise, both of which you control. This is one reason buying defined-risk long options is beginner-friendlier than selling. For the full mechanics, see assignment & exercise explained.
