Double-Catalyst Days: When CPI Lands on OPEX Friday
Every so often the calendar stacks two heavyweight events on the same session: a market-moving inflation print in the morning, and monthly options expiration pinning the tape all day. The interaction is where it gets strange.
A double-catalyst day — when an 8:30am CPI print falls on a monthly OPEX Friday — stacks a macro shock on top of enormous expiration flows. The two forces pull in different directions, and the result is one of the trickiest tapes on the calendar.
The two forces
CPI wants to move SPY: a surprise gaps price and reprices the map in the pre-market. OPEX, by contrast, often wants to pin SPY: on monthly expiration, large concentrations of open interest at key strikes create dealer hedging flows that can anchor price near heavy call and put walls. So you have a catalyst pushing for a directional move and an expiration structure pulling toward a pin — competing forces in the same session.
How they interact
Which force wins depends on the size of the CPI surprise relative to the expiration positioning. A mild CPI print may let the OPEX pin dominate — SPY drifts toward a big strike and sticks. A large surprise can overwhelm the pin, blowing SPY through the walls and forcing dealers to re-hedge violently, which accelerates the move. The gamma regime matters: in positive gamma the pin is stronger; in negative gamma a CPI shock can cascade. Reading which regime you're in tells you whether to expect a pin or a break.
CPI pushes the tape; OPEX pins it. On a double-catalyst day you're watching a tug-of-war, and the gamma regime tells you which side is stronger.
Trading it
Identify the setup early: where are the big expiration strikes, and how large was the CPI surprise? A mild print near heavy positive-gamma walls favors range/pin trades; a big print, especially in negative gamma, favors break-and-go. Respect that these days can be violently two-sided and size for the worst case. NoVo maps the live walls and gamma regime through the session, so you can see whether the pin is holding or the catalyst has broken it — the key question a double-catalyst day asks.
