The merger

In 2024 three of the sector’s AI-branded projects — agent networks, AI marketplaces, data exchanges — merged their tokens into one, with FET as the surviving ticker. Token mergers are rare; this one effectively incorporated the AI-crypto narrative itself, pooling three communities, three roadmaps and three float schedules into a single instrument.

Breadth is not a business

The merged entity spans agents, compute and data — which reads as coverage in a pitch and as diffusion in practice. Unlike RENDER’s single meter or GRT’s query market, FET’s workload story is plural and therefore harder to falsify or verify. Tokens that are hard to falsify trade almost purely on their basket.

The basket’s bellwether

And that is FET’s actual role: the broadest single-ticker expression of AI-crypto, first in and first out when the narrative rotates — the narrative-versus-workload gap at index scale. When AI headlines run, FET’s flow arrives regardless of anything any of the three merged networks shipped.

Reading it

Treat it as the AI basket’s thermometer: funding and open interest here read the whole narrative’s leverage, not one project’s prospects. Idiosyncratic moves are rare; when one happens, it is worth the unusual effort of finding out why.
