An options quote looks like a wall of numbers at first. But each one means something specific, and once you know what to look at, a quote tells you everything you need to size up a trade.
A SPY options quote packs a lot into a small space. Here's how to read the key fields so you know exactly what you're looking at before you place an order.
The core fields
Strike — the price the option is tied to. Bid — the highest price a buyer will pay (what you get if you sell). Ask — the lowest price a seller will accept (what you pay if you buy). Last — the price of the most recent trade (can be stale). The gap between bid and ask is the spread — a narrow spread means good liquidity, a wide one is costly to trade.
The liquidity and greeks fields
Volume — contracts traded today (higher = more active). Open interest — total outstanding contracts (a measure of a strike's depth). Together they tell you how liquid the strike is. The greeks — especially delta (how much the option moves per $1 in SPY) and theta (daily time decay) — tell you how the option will behave.
Bid is what you sell at, ask is what you buy at, the gap is your cost of entry. Master those three and you're already reading a quote like a trader.
The quick takeaway
Focus first on bid/ask (your real entry and exit prices and the spread cost), then volume/open interest (liquidity), then delta (responsiveness). That's enough to judge whether a strike is worth trading. Reading a quote is fundamental and stays yours — what the dealer map adds is the level the quote is being priced around (how spreads fill).
