The Initial Balance in Market Profile: Framing the SPY Day
Market profile gives the first hour a name and a job: the initial balance. How price treats it — respects it or extends it — tells you what kind of day you're in.

In market profile, the initial balance (IB) is the price range of the first hour of trading — the same first-hour range behind the morning balance break, given a formal role. It's the market's opening auction, and how price extends beyond it classifies the day.
Range extension classifies the day
Normal day: price mostly stays inside the IB — a range-bound session, fade the edges. Trend day: price extends far beyond the IB in one direction and holds — respect the trend. Neutral day: price extends beyond both sides of the IB — a choppy, two-sided session. The IB is the reference; the extension is the signal about the day's character.
How to use it
Mark the IB high and low in the first hour. Then watch the break: a decisive extension beyond the IB that holds is a trend-day tell (trade continuation, a balance break); a poke beyond that reverses back inside is a normal/range day (fade the extremes). It's the market-profile lens on the same read as the opening-range width and the trend-day checklist.
Inside the IB, it's a range day — fade. Extending beyond it and holding, it's a trend day — follow. The first hour frames the rest.
The frame
The IB is structure that frames the day, not a trigger by itself. It's strongest combined with the regime: IB extension in negative gamma confirms a trend day; a contained IB in positive gamma confirms a range day. Use it to set your expectation for the session, then trade the levels within that frame.
