Moneyness describes the relationship between an option's strike price and the current price of the underlying. In the money (ITM) means the option already has intrinsic value; at the money (ATM) means the strike is near the price; out of the money (OTM) means it has no intrinsic value yet - only time value.
How each behaves
ITM options are more expensive, move more closely with the underlying (high delta), and carry less time decay risk per dollar. OTM options are cheap, move less per point of the underlying, and are all extrinsic value - so they decay fast and can expire worthless. ATM options sit in between and carry the most vega and gamma.
The trade-off
Cheaper OTM options offer more leverage per dollar but need a bigger, faster move to pay off - and lose everything if it doesn't come. ITM options cost more but behave more like the stock and are more forgiving. There's no free lunch: you're choosing between leverage and probability.
OTM is a lottery ticket. ITM is a stock substitute. Where you buy is a bet on how the move plays out.
Choosing a strike
Strike selection is really a moneyness decision, and the right choice depends on your time frame and conviction. Far-OTM lottery tickets are how many small accounts bleed out - the math is against them. Systematic approaches select strikes deliberately, balancing cost, delta, and the realistic size of the expected move rather than chasing the cheapest ticket.
