The morning star (bullish) and evening star (bearish) are three-candle reversal patterns. The structure: a strong candle in the trend's direction, then a small-bodied candle (indecision — often a doji), then a strong candle in the opposite direction. It's a visible three-step turn.
The story it tells
In a morning star at a bottom: sellers push hard (candle one), then momentum stalls into a tight, indecisive candle (candle two), then buyers take over decisively (candle three). The middle candle is the hinge — it shows the prevailing force ran out of gas before the reversal confirmed. The evening star is the mirror image at a top.
What makes it convincing
The strongest versions have a small middle candle that gaps away from the first, and a third candle that closes well into the body of the first — a full rejection of the prior move. Rising volume on the third candle adds conviction. A weak, overlapping three-candle sequence is just chop wearing the pattern's costume.
The middle candle is the pause where the trend loses its grip. The third candle is where the other side takes it.
Using it
Morning and evening stars are more reliable than single-candle reversals because they require a three-step confirmation, but they're still context-dependent. At a meaningful level after an extended move, they're worth respecting; mid-range, they're noise. Structure and regime decide, as always.
