The gamma flip is the spot level at which aggregate dealer gamma changes sign: above it dealers damp moves, below it they amplify them. It is the single most useful line on an equity dealer map.
It must be solved, not read
A common shortcut walks cumulative gamma across the strike ladder and calls the crossing point the flip. That is not what the flip is. Gamma at every strike depends on spot, so moving spot re-prices the entire book — the flip has to be found by re-evaluating the whole book at hypothetical spot levels until the aggregate crosses zero.
In equities the shortcut is often close enough to be forgiven. In crypto it is not, and the reason is the shape of the book.
Call-heavy books push it down and away
Crypto options books lean heavily toward calls — the dominant customer expression is upside, which is not the case in equity index options where downside hedging dominates. The consequence is covered in call-heavy books, and one effect is directly on the flip.
Walking the ladder on such a book puts the apparent crossing far below spot, in a region where deep out-of-the-money puts happen to dominate the cumulative sum. Solve it properly and you often still get a distant number — just a different, defensible one.
A distant flip is an answer
This is the part worth internalising. If the solved flip sits far from spot, the correct reading is that the regime is not close to changing. Dealers are on one side of it and a move of ordinary size will not put them on the other.
That is genuinely useful information: it says the amplification mechanic is not in play today. Treating it as an error — or worse, adjusting the method until the flip lands somewhere convenient — replaces a real answer with a comfortable one. And VIX-scaling does not transfer
The band over which you scan for the flip has to reflect how far the asset actually moves. An equity scan band calibrated to index volatility is far too narrow for an asset that routinely moves several percent in a session, and a too-narrow band simply fails to find a flip that exists.
