New tokens do not arrive with liquidity and keep it. Depth follows a shape common enough to be worth naming, and the same reading carries a different meaning at each stage.
The arc
Seeded. Someone creates the pool and deposits both sides. Depth is whatever they chose to commit, held by very few providers, and it reflects one party’s decision rather than any market consensus.
Discovery. Turnover arrives, often far out of proportion to depth. This is the classic high volume against thin depth state, and it is the most expensive stage to trade size in, because price impact is severe against a small reserve.
Deepening, or not. If interest persists, providers add depth to earn the fees that turnover generates, and the pool thickens. This is the only stage where trading conditions genuinely improve. Most tokens never reach it.
Decay. Turnover falls, fee income falls with it, and the exposure described in impermanent loss stops being paid for. Providers withdraw. Depth declines, often faster than attention does, so the token still looks alive while the exit is quietly getting worse.
Why the stage changes the reading
Take one depth figure and put it at two points on the arc. In the deepening stage it is a floor — capital arriving, conditions improving, and the number likely to be better tomorrow. In decay it is a ceiling, and the pool you exit into will be thinner than the one you entered.
A snapshot cannot tell those apart. Only direction can, which is exactly the argument in liquidity added or pulled — and it is why history that cannot be bought after the fact is worth storing before the fact.
The stage nobody plans for
Decay is where most on-chain losses actually occur, and they are rarely dramatic. The token does not collapse; it simply becomes expensive to leave. A position sized against discovery-stage turnover gets exited against decay-stage depth, and the difference between the two is the loss — charged as execution cost rather than as a price move, which is why it often does not feel like a mistake that had a cause.
