VWAP is the day's center of gravity. The reversion strategy bets that price, stretched too far from it, tends to snap back. Simple idea, specific conditions.
NoVo Options Trading ·
The volume-weighted average price (VWAP) is the average price paid across the session, weighted by volume — the level institutions benchmark fills against, and the day's magnetic center (VWAP explained). Reversion trades the pull back toward it.
The setup
When price stretches well above or below VWAP without news driving it, mean-reversion pressure builds — buyers hesitate to chase far above fair value, sellers to dump far below. The reversion trade fades the stretch: short the overextension back toward VWAP, or buy the flush back up to it, targeting the line itself.
When it works, and when it doesn't
This is a balanced-market strategy. It works when the day is rotational and VWAP is flat-to-gently-sloped. It gets run over in a strong trend, where price rides far from VWAP for hours and every "too far" gets further (momentum vs mean reversion). Knowing which regime you're in is the whole edge.
VWAP reversion prints money in a range and hands it all back in a trend. The skill isn't the entry — it's refusing the trade on a trend day.
Managing it
Target VWAP, stop beyond the extreme, and respect that a clean break-and-hold on the far side of VWAP flips the read from reversion to continuation (breakout vs fakeout). Dealer positioning helps: in a positive-gamma (absorbing) regime, reversion is favored; in negative gamma, moves extend and fading is dangerous (positive vs negative gamma). See anchored VWAP.
