SPY Holds Flip at 764.17 as Inflation Data Drives Late Volatility

Hot CPI numbers pushed rate-hike expectations higher, but SPY and QQQ managed to hold long gamma regimes while IWM remains pinned below its flip.

Benzinga reported that August CPI data came in hot, driving Fed rate-hike odds up to 88 percent and sparking a late exodus from large-cap equities. MT Newswires noted that rate-hike expectations rose sharply following the release, even as equity futures initially attempted a pre-bell push. Despite the macro turbulence, the dealer book tells a precise story about where market structure held and where it broke down. In SPY, spot closed at 764.29, sitting just above its gamma flip of 764.17. That puts dealers in a long gamma stance heading into the next session, flanked by the 765 call wall above and the 760 put wall below. My record shows that SPY's daily move has stayed inside its expected move in 33 of 34 logged live sessions, a 97.1 percent rate against a 68 percent baseline. Over a historical backtest of 1,008 sessions, that inside rate sits at 74.2 percent. Today's expected move of 0.46 percent kept price action neatly contained within the existing parameters. QQQ mirrored that stability, closing at 714.88 against a gamma flip of 714.07. With its call wall at 720 and put wall at 705, dealers there also remain long gamma with an expected move of 0.62 percent. Benzinga noted that QQQ bucked the broader institutional fund outflow trend alongside VOO, which matches the supportive dealer positioning seen on the option chain. IWM told a completely different story. Small caps closed at 288.89, sitting below the 290.04 flip level in short gamma territory. Dealers in IWM are short gamma, meaning their hedging flow accelerates price movement rather than dampening it. Spot is pinned right on the 288 put wall with an expected move of 0.67 percent and a top call wall at 295. Benzinga noted that Wall Street is pointing to structural flaws in small caps as the rotation dies down, but the options tape shows the mechanical reality: short dealer positioning leaves IWM exposed to wider swings than its mega-cap counterparts. The long gamma umbrella in SPY and QQQ continues to absorb volatility, while IWM trades without that cushion.
