Goldman and JPMorgan Post Divergent Q3 Results Amid Equity Boom

Wall Street lenders kicked off third-quarter earnings with volatile markets fueling a surge in stock trading while persistent interest rates dampened corporate dealmaking.

Wall Street lenders launched third-quarter earnings season with mixed prints that put the divergence across investment banking and equity trading on full display. The Associated Press and Investing.com reported that while elevated volatility handed banks hefty windfalls on trading desks, stubborn interest rate headwinds continued to stall broad-scale debt underwriting and merger closings. Goldman Sachs beat consensus comfortably, reporting earnings per share of $17.01 against the $13.09 expected by analysts. The outperformance came almost entirely out of its trading book: equity markets revenue surged 72% to $6.44 billion during the quarter. By contrast, traditional advisory desks across the Street faced another quarter of delayed transactional closings and quiet debt pipelines. JPMorgan Chase painted a more cautious picture. The largest U.S. bank by assets posted revenue of $50.17 billion, missing consensus estimates of $51.23 billion, alongside earnings per share of $5.75. The firm took a $658 million investment loss even as its own equity trading revenue jumped 49%, reflecting how choppy capital markets created sharp internal crosscurrents across retail lending, advisory fees, and market-making desks. Across the rest of the major bank reports, Citigroup turned in earnings per share of $2.85, while Wells Fargo posted revenue of $21.87 billion and per-share earnings of $1.87. The reports collectively confirm that higher-for-longer borrowing costs are producing a distinct bifurcated environment for systemic money-center institutions: active market-making units continue to feast on elevated volume and wide trading spreads, while corporate borrowing and transaction volumes remain subdued until central banks ease financial conditions. The mixed bank earnings landed alongside broader pressure on technology equities, where Nasdaq-100 front-month futures eased 0.4% to 30,775 and the QQQ options book showed dealers pinned in short gamma below the 748.48 flip. For financial institutions navigating the close of the calendar year, the earnings underline that market volatility can temporarily paper over quiet underwriting pipelines, but cannot replace a sustained return of corporate credit demand.
