Bank of America shares slid 7.7% during the session to $49.77, down from the prior close of $53.94, after the bank delivered third-quarter earnings that fell short of Wall Street forecasts.
Yahoo Finance reported that earnings for the lender were outright ugly, citing misses on the bottom line alongside weaker-than-expected trading revenue and an underwhelming dealmaking and IPO business. Analysts had penciled in an earnings per share consensus of $1.11 heading into the print, but softer fees across the franchise left the lender trailing those projections. The drop wiped billions off the firm's $381.7 billion valuation in early trade, standing out against stronger peer prints across the banking sector.
The sharp repricing in financials fed directly into index-level positioning as the opening bell sounded. Across the wider equity book, broader market dealers were forced deeper into defensive footing. SPY slipped to 776.18, sitting firmly in short gamma territory beneath its 780.83 flip level, with price leaning against its 776 put wall. When spot trades below the flip, dealers shift from dampening swings to pressing moves as they sell into declines to stay hedged.
Technology and broader index flow echoed that drag. QQQ was pushed down to 740.19, also underwater in short gamma below its 740.72 flip, with the 735 put wall waiting beneath. Meanwhile, small caps tracked through IWM maintained long gamma above a 272.24 flip, cushioning parts of the domestic basket even as headline money-center bank earnings pressured the majors. How dealers handle Bank of America's open put skew will determine whether this dip stabilizes or deepens into the session close.
