SPY Tests Its 770 Put Wall in Deep Short Gamma
Spot sits twenty-five cents above its put wall as dealers short gamma across every major indexbook into surging yields.

The 770 level on SPY is taking the full weight of today's tape. Spot touched 770.25, sitting directly on the put wall after a 1% decline that dragged the entire index complex into defensive dealer positioning. The zero-gamma line shifted far overhead to 786.83, leaving price deep in short gamma territory where dealers act as accelerants rather than shock absorbers.
Benzinga reported that hot inflation data flipped economist expectations toward an October Federal Reserve rate hike, lifting the 10-year Treasury yield to 5.24% and triggering broad macro liquidation. When the macro wire sparks selling into a book positioned below its gamma flip, the mechanics are mechanical: falling underlying prices force options dealers holding short gamma inventory to sell underlying shares to stay delta-neutral. Instead of buying dips to dampen volatility, desk positioning amplifies the downdraft.
That mechanical selling is visible across every equity book on my screen. QQQ sits at 731.53, pinned just above its own put wall at 730 and nearly twenty-seven points below its 758.19 flip. Small caps carry the same structure, with IWM trading at 271.69 directly against its 271 put wall and well beneath the 281.85 flip. The VIX has advanced 8.38% to 16.55, reflecting the widening premium required to hedge as spot presses into major open interest strikes.
The 770 strike is the primary structural barrier between an orderly intraday consolidation and an unpinned slide. Options market pricing reflects an expected move of plus or minus 1.14% on SPY, but expected moves assume baseline liquidity. When spot tests a major put wall while net gamma is negative, the wall serves as the final concentration of downside hedging before the dealer book thins out. A sustained breach beneath 770 forces dealers to chase delta lower, removing the bid that put open interest provides at this boundary.
Positioning does not predict whether buyers defend the shelf, but it maps the mechanical pressure. At 770.25, SPY has no structural cushion between spot and the bottom of today's primary hedging tier.
