The closing bell confirmed what the tape threatened all morning. Equities ended Tuesday firmly trapped in short gamma regimes across the board, with dealers shifting from stabilizing shock absorbers into sellers of the breakdown. A hot inflation print set off an early macro chill across risk assets, and by the 4:00 PM close, the equity book had absorbed heavy distribution without any structural bid stepping up to cushion it.
QQQ bore the brunt of the pressure among the indices, falling 1.97% to close at 728.95. That finish keeps the tech tape deep beneath its gamma flip at 752.48, well within the zone where dealer hedging amplifies intraday volatility instead of dampening it. The expected move was priced at plus or minus 1.53%, but the downside carried spot down to test the 725 put wall, which remains the single substantial barrier below current prices. Skew closed at 3.7, showing the tape continuing to price significant demand for downside protection into tomorrow.
SPY tracked a similar structural path, sliding 1.08% to close at 769.60. That print sits well under its 780.41 flip, cementing negative gamma across large caps as well. The put wall at 766 managed to hold off a deeper flush, but sitting just above it means dealers remain positioned to sell dips rather than pad them. With the 780 call wall now sitting overhead as heavy resistance, the index has built a wide gap back to its neutral line.
Small caps fared no better. IWM dropped 1.93% to settle at 271.37, sliding straight through its range and landing just a dollar above its 270 put wall. Its flip sits far above at 282.66, with a skew of 2.5 reflecting the broad demand for index puts.
The same cross-market de-risking showed up in crypto, where Bitcoin broke under its $83,466 flip to trade down around $81,815. With net GEX sitting firmly negative at -$19.5 million on the BTC book, both equities and digital assets are entering the next session with positioning heavily tilted to the seller's side. Until spot can mount a recovery back toward these flips, dealer hedging will continue to widen ranges instead of containing them.
