The single easiest way to improve your open? Don’t trade the first minute. Here’s the case for waiting.
NoVo Options Trading ·
The first minute after the open is a chaotic burst of price discovery where spreads are wide, moves are violent, and whipsaws are common — a poor risk/reward for most scalpers. Waiting a few minutes is one of the easiest edges there is.
Why the first minute is a trap
In the first minute, the opening auction has just cleared and price is violently hunting for fair value. Spreads are wider than normal, moves reverse without warning (whipsaws), and no structure has formed yet. Acting here means trading maximum noise with the worst fills — a recipe for getting chopped before the day’s real setup appears.
What to do instead
Watch the first few minutes to read the opening drive and let the opening range form. Then trade the break or fade of that range with real structure and tighter spreads. You give up nothing by waiting — the tradeable move is the reaction to the open, not the open’s first frantic tick.
The first minute offers the worst fills, the most noise, and no structure. Waiting five minutes costs you nothing and saves you from the day’s dumbest whipsaws.
What it means for a scalper
Make it a rule: no trades in the first minute (many extend it to five). Let the chaos resolve into structure, then act. It’s a small discipline that prevents a lot of early damage, and it pairs with letting the opening range guide your first real trade.
