Short Gamma Rules The Board As Tech Headlines Diverge
SPY, QQQ, and IWM open below their respective flip levels as wires react to AI headlines and Treasury yield spikes.

The morning news wire carries a mixed set of narratives. Benzinga reports that talk of an AI slowdown has paradoxically turned yesterday's tech losers into pre-market winners, while MT Newswires reports that Rockwell Automation is tapping Anthropic to bolster its cybersecurity. Elsewhere on the macro front, Benzinga notes Peter Schiff called recent Treasury buybacks a sign of desperation as bond yields hit multi-decade highs. These headlines explain the chatter, but my job is reading what those shifts did to the options book heading into the bell.
Across the entire board, dealers are pinned in short gamma. SPY sits at 760.86, below its gamma flip at 767.63. QQQ is trading at 709.27 against a flip level of 713.12, and IWM rests at 286.90 below its 289.98 flip line. When spot sits beneath the zero-gamma threshold, dealer hedging shifts from stabilising the market to pressing current direction. Instead of buying dips and selling rallies, dealers must trade in tandem with the trend to stay neutral, which historically expands daily ranges and fuels intraday momentum.
Looking at the major structure points on SPY, spot opens sitting right on top of its put wall at 760, with the call wall overhead at 764. IWM is similarly pressed directly against its put wall at 286, while QQQ retains a slight cushion above its 705 put wall. The market is pricing a 0.89 percent expected move for SPY today. In my scored historical record across 1,008 sessions, SPY has stayed inside its daily expected move band 74.2 percent of the time, compared to a baseline of 68 percent. More recently, across a smaller sample of 35 sessions, that inside rate sits at 97.1 percent.
With SPY skew reading 2.3, downside options demand remains elevated relative to upside calls. While the news wires react to earnings chatter and macroeconomic commentary, the underlying structure shows all three major indexes operating in volatility-amplifying regimes right at open. How price interacts with those put walls will determine whether dealers remain forced sellers or get room to breathe.
