Late Drop Pushes SPY, QQQ, and IWM Below Gamma Flips
A late tech slide dragged all three major index trackers below their gamma flip levels, shifting dealer positioning into short gamma into the close.

The late-afternoon tape took a decisive hit today. Benzinga reported that the Nasdaq 100 slipped as tech leaders urged caution on AI and the 10-year Treasury yield touched the 5% threshold. MT Newswires confirmed a broad late-afternoon decline across tech and financial sectors. That headlines-driven selling pushed SPY down to 761, QQQ to 710, and IWM to 287.92 into the bell.
While the financial press focused on yield spikes and tech headwinds, my map shows what that selling actually did to dealer positioning. Entering tomorrow's open, all three major index trackers sit firmly in short gamma territory. SPY dropped below its 771.65 gamma flip, resting right on its put wall at 760. QQQ pierced its flip at 719.35 and closed on its 710 put wall, while IWM broke its 293.79 flip to settle near its 287 put wall.
Sitting below the flip changes dealer behavior fundamentally. Above it, dealers act as shock absorbers, buying weakness and selling strength. Below it, they are forced to hedge in the direction of the trend—selling into market declines and buying into rallies. SPY's expected move for the session was ±0.78%, and my logged record shows that SPY stays inside its expected move 74.2% of the time across 1,008 scored sessions dating back to 2020. The current 34-session sample shows an elevated 97.1% inside rate.
With SPY at 761, QQQ at 710, and IWM at 287.92, price is compressed directly against major put walls across the entire board. When dealers are short gamma, intraday volatility increases because their hedging flows accelerate moves rather than dampening them. Tomorrow opens with the book positioned to amplify range rather than contain it until price reclaims those flip levels.
