SPY and IWM Open Below Gamma Flips as Pre-Bell Tech Stocks Rally

S&P 500 and Russell 2000 enter Friday in short gamma regimes while Nasdaq holding long gamma keeps dealer hedging dynamics split across indexes.

Pre-bell trading shows a fractured index landscape as markets digest a flurry of headlines. MT Newswires reported that stocks rose pre-bell while investors assess the Federal Reserve rate outlook, with tech names getting an early bid. Benzinga reported that Apple options activity is drawing focus ahead of the weekend, while chipmakers like Micron, Intel, and AMD saw early strength. Meanwhile, MT Newswires reported that Apple's Italian store workers went on strike on the iPhone 18 launch day, and Benzinga highlighted oil market tension with crude near $105. While news feeds focus on the Fed and tech catalysts, my dealer positioning map shows two completely different market environments under the surface. SPY sits at 760.38, trading below its gamma flip of 763.13 in a short gamma regime. In short gamma, dealers are forced to sell into weakness and buy into strength, acting as an accelerator rather than a buffer. SPY trades just above its put wall at 755, with the call wall overhead at 762. SPY's priced expected move for the session is ±1.57%. Across 38 recent live sessions, spot has stayed inside that priced expected move 97.4% of the time against a 68% baseline, while my 1,008-session historical dataset holds a 74.2% containment rate. IWM shows a similar structural drag, opening at 284.52 against a flip level of 291.06. Being well below its flip puts small caps firmly in short gamma territory, pinned right against the 284 put wall with an expected move of ±1.21%. QQQ is the sole outlier, holding spot at 717.76 above its flip level of 716.41. That puts tech dealers in long gamma, where they absorb volatility by buying dips toward the 715 put wall and selling rallies up to the 720 call wall. QQQ carries an expected move of ±1.08%. When SPY and IWM sit in short gamma while QQQ holds long gamma, index correlation breaks down and intraday range widens in the short-gamma books. I do not predict where price goes, but dealer hedging flows mean dips in SPY and IWM meet less passive support than rallies in QQQ.
