IRGC Projectile Sinks Merchant Tanker in the Strait of Hormuz

U.S. Central Command confirmed the sinking of the GFS Pride as maritime conflict drives up tanker costs and tests global energy shipping.

U.S. Central Command confirmed that an Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps projectile struck and sank the Singapore-flagged vessel GFS Pride in the Strait of Hormuz. All 21 crew members were safely rescued, according to wire reporting from FirstSquawk. The strike marks a sharp physical escalation in one of the world's most critical maritime choke points, where more than 40 commercial vessels had transited within the previous 24 hours. The strike lands directly on an already strained maritime supply chain. Nikkei reported that prices for 15-year-old oil tankers have now surpassed new builds by 22%, driven by rerouted journeys, extended transit times, and climbing charter demand as war risks escalate around Iranian waters. With operators forced into longer voyages to bypass elevated threat zones, effective fleet capacity has shrunk, bidding up legacy tonnage across the global tanker market. The military strike coincides with tightening economic measures from Washington aimed at choking off Tehran's revenue. U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent stated that the administration intends to maintain unremitting pressure until Iran's financial lifelines are completely severed. In comments carried by Cointelegraph, Bessent said that the noose is tightening around Iran's economy and that not even its regional allies would be able to shield it from enforcement. Energy markets absorbed the maritime escalation alongside a broader backdrop of macro pressure. Front-month WTI crude futures sat at $96.05 per barrel, up 1.01% on the session, while Brent futures traded at $105.44. Wholesale inflation numbers published earlier showed persistent energy price pressure, with the U.S. Producer Price Index advancing 1.3% month-over-month. Safe-haven assets saw simultaneous bids, with gold futures climbing 2.02% to $4,191.00 an ounce, while the 10-year Treasury yield dropped to 5.09% as capital fled into sovereign paper. For shipping operators and commodity desks, the sinking of the GFS Pride turns theoretical transit risk into verified vessel loss. Insurers are reassessing maritime war-risk premiums for Persian Gulf transit, while charterers face compounding costs across both physical tanker rates and longer rerouted transit lanes.
