AI Safety Headlines Push Indexes Below Flips Into Short Gamma

Tech pre-market drops have pushed SPY, QQQ, and IWM below their gamma flip levels, leaving dealers short gamma across the major indexes ahead of the Fed rate decision.

The headlines out this morning are driving the tape, but the dealer book shows where the leverage actually sits. MT Newswires and Benzinga reported pre-bell selling across major tech equities following AI safety warnings and comments from OpenAI's Sam Altman that no IPO is coming this year. Benzinga also noted pressure on semiconductor names including Nvidia and AMD. That pre-market drop has pushed all three major index trackers below their respective gamma flips, leaving dealers positioned short gamma across the board. When price sits below the flip, dealers move from shock absorbers to trend accelerators. On SPY, spot is down to 758.81 with the flip sitting overhead at 774.91. That leaves dealers short gamma with a put wall at 755 and a call wall at 766. For QQQ, spot at 702.34 sits just beneath its flip at 702.51, directly against its put wall at 700 and well below the call wall at 720. IWM reflects the exact same structural posture, with spot at 287.56 trading below its flip at 288.51, anchored between a put wall at 285 and a call wall at 292. My scored record tracks how price behaves within these bounds. Across 1,008 backtested sessions, SPY's expected move has held inside its defined parameter 74.2% of the time against a 68% baseline. In my live scoring over 34 sessions, SPY has stayed inside its expected move range in 33 of them, a 97.1% rate. With SPY's daily expected move currently priced at ±1.43%, the book is setting a defined volatility boundary while dealers actively hedge in the direction of intraday breaks. Headline chatter tells you why the market moved before the bell, but positioning governs how price digests the flow once the open arrives. With dealers short gamma across SPY, QQQ, and IWM, intraday moves lack the usual hedging cushion until price can reclaim those overhead flip levels.
