AI Warnings Push Indexes Short Gamma Ahead of Open
Tech warnings from Anthropic and OpenAI have dragged SPY, QQQ, and IWM below their gamma flips before Monday's open.

Tech headlines are driving the pre-bell narrative, but the market structure is where the actual risk sits. MT Newswires reported that Anthropic's CEO urged the AI industry to slow development, while OpenAI's Sam Altman noted no IPO is planned this year. Benzinga reported tech futures dropping in response, dragging major names lower before the open. That headline pressure has pushed all three major index trackers into short gamma regimes across the board.
I read the book to see how dealers are forced to react, and right now they are stripped of their stabilizing role. SPY sits at 758.7, comfortably below its gamma flip of 774.77. The call wall sits at 766 while the put wall at 755 provides the immediate floor. In a short gamma regime, dealers no longer insulate the tape by buying dips and selling rallies. Instead, they are forced to trade with the prevailing direction, expanding intraday range and accelerating volatility.
QQQ is walking an even tighter line. Spot sits at 702.24 against a gamma flip at 702.40, placing the tech book directly on the edge of short gamma territory. Its call wall is up at 720, with the put wall at 700 acting as the sole structural cushion below current prices. IWM joins the alignment at 287.51, sitting below its 288.45 flip, anchored between a 292 call wall and a 285 put wall.
When the entire board opens in short gamma, the expected moves define the initial boundaries rather than strict price targets. SPY holds an expected move of plus or minus 1.43%, QQQ prices plus or minus 0.83%, and IWM sits at plus or minus 0.70%. My historical record across 1,008 scored sessions shows SPY's expected move holds price inside its bands 74.2% of the time, against a baseline of 68%. Positioning prices range rather than direction, and with all three trackers below their flips, the open is set up for wider swings than a standard positive-gamma tape would allow.
