Funding on a stock or index perp is one of the few weekend readings an agent can fetch live. It is also a number that goes wrong in the retelling. The agent averages things that should stay apart, drops the unit, or stretches a short record into a long one. Each of these has a simple fix.
What the tool returns
With a paid key, get_stocks_onchain returns the stock, index, commodity and currency perps on Hyperliquid’s builder books. Each perp carries its mark, funding, open interest, volume and premium. Pass a symbol for one name. Leave it out and you get the largest of each. The mechanics of the payment are in funding on a stock perp.
One ticker, several books
Outside teams list their own perpetual markets on separate books. The same ticker can appear on more than one. Each listing has its own price, its own funding and its own open interest. They are separate markets and are never added together.
An agent tidying up an answer may average the two funding rates or sum the open interest. That produces a number no trader can actually get. Ask for funding per market, with the book named. The reasoning is the same one behind why funding is never blended across venues.
Hourly charge, yearly rate
Funding on these markets is charged hourly. It is usually quoted as a yearly rate so that markets can be compared. The conversion is the hourly rate times 24 times 365. That is a change of unit with no compounding. An agent should state which unit it is quoting. A figure with no unit could be off by a factor of thousands.
The sign needs saying too. Positive funding means longs pay shorts. Negative means shorts pay longs. An agent that reports funding is high has told you nothing until it says which side pays.
The resting value
On 4 October 2026 most large markets showed identical funding of about 5.5% a year. That figure is the formula’s resting value. A market sitting there is at rest. An agent that reads it as a bullish lean has misread it. The markets worth a second look that day were the few far from the resting value, some of them sharply negative.
How long the record is
The tool reports how long NoVo’s own record runs in history.span_hours. NoVo’s collector has recorded these markets every pass since 4 October 2026. An average can only cover the span that exists. If the agent says weekly average, check the span. A good agent quotes the span with the average and does not round it up.
What to ask for
Put it in one request. Give me funding for this symbol, per market, as a yearly rate, with the side that pays, the reading’s age and the span of any average. The answer describes what holders are paying now. It says nothing about where the stock goes.
The same readings are drawn on the Stocks On-Chain tab of the Crypto Market Map and on the Perps & Futures tab of Trader.
