NoVo vs BackQuant: two crypto gamma APIs, compared honestly

BackQuant is the closest thing to a direct competitor we have, and on crypto alone they are cheaper. Here is exactly where each one wins.

Both products compute dealer gamma positioning on crypto options and sell it over an API: gamma by strike, the call and put walls, the zero-gamma flip, and a historical series. If you are buying crypto GEX and nothing else, BackQuant is the cheaper option and we would rather say so here than have you find out afterwards. Where the two diverge is what sits around the crypto map.

What BackQuant does well

They are good, and the price is the sharp end of it. $49 a month buys strike-level gamma exposure, ranked call and put walls, the zero-gamma flip, a historical GEX series and dealer positioning with regime detection, across BTC, ETH, SOL, HYPE and a hundred more assets, sourced from four option venues. They ship an MCP server too, so the AI-client story is not ours alone. If your entire requirement is a crypto GEX feed, they cover it for thirty dollars less than we do and we are not going to pretend otherwise.

Where NoVo is different

Three things, and only the first is about coverage.

Both books, one key. Our equity dealer map on SPY, QQQ and IWM comes down the same API, with the same schema and the same freshness fields, as the crypto map. BackQuant has equity GEX and it is a Terminal product, not an API one — so a question like is the index tape leading crypto today needs two vendors and two integrations rather than one call.

The analyst layer. Every vendor in this category sells you JSON and leaves the reading to you. Dr. NoVo answers the question in plain English off the live map and cites which tools produced which number, so the answer can be checked rather than believed.

The instrument is honest about itself. Every reading carries when it was measured, how many seconds ago, and what kind of measurement it is. Nothing is zero-filled: a collector that cannot see the book returns a 503, never a calm-looking zero. You can read the rules on data integrity and the failure codes on the error contract.

On the thirty dollars

It is a real gap and it should decide the purchase for some people. If you want crypto gamma and nothing else, and you are happy reading JSON yourself, BackQuant is the better buy at $49. Our $79 is the same number as our crypto dashboard, deliberately, so the line stays coherent — and what it has to earn is the equity book beside the crypto one, the analyst, the alerts and the recorded history. If none of those matter to you, take the cheaper one.

Which should you pick

Crypto only, on a budget, comfortable with raw data: BackQuant. Trading both the index tape and crypto, or wanting the map interpreted and alerted on rather than parsed: NoVo. They are closer to each other than either is to the rest of the field, and a desk could reasonably run both. See the crypto map, the API and MCP, or the whole crypto gamma field.

Comparison for information only, not financial advice. Competitor details and prices were verified against each provider’s own public pages in September 2026 and may have changed since; check with each provider before buying. NoVo is our product.

FAQ

Common questions

Is NoVo a BackQuant alternative?
For crypto dealer gamma, yes — both compute gamma by strike, the walls and the zero-gamma flip, and both expose it over an API and an MCP server. BackQuant is $49 against our $79. The difference is what comes with it: our equity dealer map is on the same key, and theirs is a separate Terminal product.
Which is cheaper?
BackQuant, for crypto alone: $49/mo against our $79/mo. If you need index positioning as well, the comparison changes, because that is a second subscription with them and included with ours.
Does BackQuant have an MCP server?
Yes. MCP is not a differentiator in this category any more — BackQuant ships one and so does Laevitas. What differs is what the tools return and whether anything interprets it.
Can I get equity GEX from the BackQuant API?
Not as of our September 2026 check — their SPX, NDX and single-name gamma is in the Terminal rather than the API. Verify with them, since that is exactly the sort of thing that changes.
