Market data inside your AI app: the MCP servers worth knowing

Connecting a data feed to Claude or Cursor takes a URL and a key. Choosing which feed is the part worth thinking about.

The Model Context Protocol turned market data into something you can ask questions of directly, in the app you already work in. Several providers now ship one, so the question has moved from whether you can do this to whose tools you want your model calling. Here is the field, and the things that actually separate a useful connector from a thin wrapper.

NoVoNotes
Dr. NoVo33 tools, 20 with no keyEquity and crypto dealer maps, base rates, volatility record, journal search, standing alerts, and ask_novo — an analyst tool that answers in English and cites what it read. $79 / $149 / $399
Laevitas—20+ tools across crypto derivatives: IV, Greeks, skew, OI, GEX. 15+ venues. x402 pay-per-request in USDC. Free / $50 / $500
BackQuant—MCP server over their crypto GEX API — strike-level gamma, walls, flip, historical series. $49/mo
TipRanks—Official server, 60-plus read-only tools — analyst consensus and price targets, the Smart Score, insider, hedge-fund and politician trades, fundamentals, technicals, news. A free key at 50 calls a month; 100 and 200 a month on its paid plans, paid API plans above that. Opinions and filings rather than positioning. Compared here.
General finance servers—A growing set wrapping public quote APIs. Fine for prices; none of them compute dealer positioning

What separates a good MCP server from a thin one

Tool descriptions are runtime, not documentation. They are the only thing the model reads when deciding which tool to call and how to interpret the result. Vague ones produce tools that are either never called or called for things they cannot do.

Annotations have to be per tool and correct. Read-only, destructive, idempotent, open-world — clients use these to decide what to run without asking you first. A write tool mislabelled as read-only gets executed silently. We shipped that inversion once, on our own alert tools, and it is why we check it mechanically now.

Refusals should be machine-readable. When a tool cannot answer, a named reason code lets the model say something true. An empty result lets it say the market is quiet.

New tools should appear without reconnecting. A server that changes its tool list should say so; a client that has to be restarted to see a tool you are paying for is a bad experience nobody warns you about.

Free before paid

The most useful thing about an MCP data server is that you can evaluate it before paying. Ours exposes 20 of 33 tools with no key at all — delayed or aggregate by design, and complete within that. Point a client at the URL and ask it something. What you learn in ten minutes about error handling, freshness fields and description quality is what the paid tier is like too, because it is the same code with more rows.

What ours is for

Asking a question that spans both books and getting an answer with its sources named. Is BTC stretched the same way the index is? What did the map look like when this last happened? Alert me when the flip moves more than this. All three are one sentence in a chat window and none of them are a single REST call. See the MCP and API or the journal on connecting it.

Comparison for information only, not financial advice. Competitor details and prices were verified against each provider’s own public pages in September 2026 and may have changed since; check with each provider before buying. NoVo is our product.

FAQ

Common questions

What is an MCP server?
A standard way for an AI app to call outside tools. You give the client a URL and a key; the server tells it what tools exist and what each does; the model calls them while answering you. Read the longer version in the journal.
Do I need to write code?
No. An MCP connector is a URL and a key pasted into your AI client. The API is there for when you want deterministic calls from your own code, which is a different job.
Which clients work?
Anything that speaks MCP — Claude, Cursor and a growing list. If your client cannot set custom headers, a well-built server will take the key another way rather than locking you out; ours does.
Is MCP a differentiator?
Not any more. Laevitas, BackQuant and TipRanks all ship one. What differs is what the tools return, whether anything interprets it, and whether the server is honest when it cannot answer.
