An agent is only as useful as what it can look up, and the list of providers selling data to trading agents grew sharply this week. They are easy to blur together. They should not be, because each measures something different, and an agent asked the wrong question of the right tool still gets a confident wrong answer.

Flow: what traded

Flow tools watch the tape for transactions: sweeps, large blocks, unusual activity against normal volume, dark-pool prints. Unusual Whales is the best-known name here. Flow answers "who just did something large", and it is backward-looking by construction, which is not a weakness. It is a record of what was actually bought and sold.

Dealer positioning: what is hedged

Positioning tools estimate where options dealers are exposed, and therefore where their hedging is forced: gamma by strike, the call and put walls, the gamma flip, net exposure. SpotGamma covers this for equities. Positioning answers a different question from flow: not what traded, but where the structure will push price when it moves.

That is the category NoVo is in, on SPY, QQQ and IWM. It also runs the same read on the crypto options book, which expires every day at 08:00 UTC: gamma by strike on the seven coins with a real book, and per-venue funding, open interest and cost-to-trade across roughly ninety more.

On-chain: what a protocol does

On-chain tools such as Token Terminal measure crypto businesses through their ledgers: fees, revenue, active users, value locked. They answer whether a protocol is growing. They say nothing about where the options market is positioned around its token, which is a different book entirely.

Alternative data: who else is acting

Quiver Quantitative and others track disclosures: congressional trades, lobbying, insider filings. These are slow, reported with a lag, and genuinely independent of price action, which is their value.

Using them together

These are complements more often than competitors. Flow says something large just traded; positioning says whether the structure will absorb that move or amplify it. An agent with access to both can ask the second question, and that is a better question than either answers alone.

Whatever you connect, ask the agent which tool each figure came from. A grounded answer names it.
