NoVo publishes two notes that bracket the weekend for an index trader. The Week Ahead comes out on Sunday evening. The Open comes out before the bell. Both now quote the index perps. A quoted figure in a written note is read differently from a live figure on a dashboard, and it helps to know what the quote carries with it.

What a quote has to carry

A perp move in a sentence needs three things beside it. It needs the start point, which is the perp’s own print at the last regular cash close. It needs the time it was read, because the perp keeps trading after the note is published. And it needs its kind: a market price on another venue. With those three, the reader knows what was measured. Without them, the same number reads like a prediction.

The Week Ahead on Sunday evening

On Sunday evening the perp has traded for two days and futures are only just back. The perp figure in the Week Ahead is the longest-running live read on the index at that moment. It tells you where traders have had the S&P 500 and the Nasdaq 100 across the weekend. It is a natural opening fact for a note about the week to come.

The Open before the bell

By the time The Open is published, the picture is fuller. Futures have traded all night. Pre-market trading in SPY has usually begun. The perp is now one read among several, and usually not the deepest. Its figure is still useful as the continuous one. It has been measured the same way since Friday’s close, with no pause, so it shows the whole path from the bell to the morning.

Reading a quoted figure

Check the time first. A figure read an hour before you opened the note may have moved. The live number is on Trader. Then check what it is measured from, which is always the cash close. Then put it against the dealer map yourself. A note can tell you the perps have the index down three tenths. Whether that carries SPY across its gamma flip is a reading the map supplies. How to use a morning and close desk note covers reading a note against a live screen.

What the quote will not say

It will not say where the market opens. It will not give a figure for IWM, because there is no small-cap perp to quote. It will not describe the perp as having a flip or walls. Those belong to SPY, QQQ and IWM options. What a newsroom owes a reader sets out the standard: say what was measured, when, and stop there.

Where the live figure is

The notes quote the perps as they stood when written. The Perps & Futures tab on Trader shows them now, with the seven mega-cap perps and the dealer maps beside them. For a program, the paid get_stocks_onchain tool on the NoVo MCP & API returns the same reading with its as_of time.
