The weekends people remember are the ones with a large move. Most are not like that. The S&P 500 perp trades from Friday to Monday and ends up close to where it started. No push arrives. It is easy to treat that as nothing. It is a reading, and before the perps existed there was no way to take it.
Flat used to mean unknown
For two days there was no price on the index. Quiet and no information looked the same. A trader on Sunday afternoon could not tell a calm weekend from one where something was building. Now there is a live market the whole time. If it has gone nowhere, traders with money at stake have left the index where Friday put it.
What it says about Friday’s map
The dealer map you saved on Friday was drawn around Friday’s close. A flat perp says the implied level is still at that close. SPY’s position against the gamma flip, the distance to each wall and the place inside the expected move are all as you left them. No translation is needed. Weekend gamma and thin books covers what the options book looks like while it waits.
Flat through news
A flat weekend means most when something happened. If a headline landed on Saturday and the perp did not move, a live market looked at it and declined to reprice the index. That is a measured non-reaction. It is worth more than a guess that the news does not matter, because someone could have traded on it and did not.
The other numbers
Check funding and open interest before calling it flat. A perp can sit still while funding climbs away from its resting value, which means one side is paying more to hold a price that is not moving. It can sit still while open interest builds. A still price with both of those at rest is flat in every sense. A still price with either of them moving is a weekend where positions changed and price did not.
What it leaves open
Two things. First, Friday’s expiring options are gone on Monday, so the map changes even when price does not. The morning after expiry covers how walls and the flip can shift for that reason alone. Second, time has passed. An option is two days closer to expiry after a weekend in which the index went nowhere, the subject of weekend theta decay.
What it does not say
It does not say Monday is quiet. A flat perp on Sunday is a description of the weekend. The open, the first data release and the first hour are all still ahead. A flat reading removes one reason to redraw your levels. It adds no reason to expect a calm session.
Trader shows the index perps’ move since the close all weekend. No push means neither perp reached half a percent from its close in either direction.
