A screen full of numbers invites interpretation. Funding has a value, open interest has a value, and both tick. It is easy to believe each tick means something. Much of the time the positioning panel is saying nothing, and the skill is recognizing that.
Funding at rest
Funding formulas have a default value they return to when the perp trades at its reference. A rate sitting at that default is the formula idling. It is small and positive on many venues, which tempts people to read mild bullishness into it. The clearest example came from stock perps. On 4 October 2026 most of the large ones showed identical funding of about 5.5% a year. Unrelated markets with one rate are showing the resting value, as the resting funding rate on stock perps sets out.
Flat open interest, background liquidations
Flat open interest means that, on balance, nobody opened and nobody closed. Contracts may have changed hands. The total leverage in the market did not change. There is no build to worry about and no unwind to explain.
There are always some liquidations. A few overleveraged accounts get closed on any ordinary wiggle. A small, two-sided trickle is the normal hum of a leveraged market. It becomes information only when it grows large or leans hard to one side.
The middle of the range
A positioning number matters when it is unusual for that market. That needs a comparison with the market’s own history, and the argument for doing it properly is in funding extremes and what follows. A reading in the middle of its historical range is ordinary by definition. Ordinary readings do not carry a signal, however precise they look.
Why a non-read is useful
First, it stops a trader inventing a story. Forcing meaning out of a flat panel is how small noise becomes a conviction. The same discipline applies to dealer maps, as in when the map goes quiet. Second, a flat panel is itself a description. It says leverage is light and nobody is paying up, so a price move from here has less forced flow waiting to extend it.
Silent is not the same as stale
One check before accepting a quiet reading: make sure it is current. A number that has not changed because nothing happened is different from a number that has not changed because the feed stopped. A reading should carry the time it was taken. Old data that looks calm is not evidence of a calm market.
Where to see it
The NoVo Crypto Market Map shows funding per venue, open interest and 24-hour liquidation flow for each coin. Dr. NoVo, a markets SI, reads the panel as it is, including when it is flat.
