SoftBank Completes $30 Billion OpenAI Funding Round

SoftBank closed its final capital tranche into OpenAI at an $852 billion valuation as tech index options hold in short gamma beneath their flip.

SoftBank Group completed its $30 billion investment into OpenAI, fulfilling the final tranche of its commitment to the AI developer's major financing round, as reported by Investing.com and Reuters. The investment brings SoftBank's cumulative backing in OpenAI to $64.6 billion, securing an approximate 13% ownership stake. The overall funding round reached $122 billion at an $852 billion valuation, funded in part by SoftBank's $11.1 billion high-yield corporate bond issuance, according to the reporting. The massive capital injection supplies OpenAI with liquidity to fund infrastructure and compute expenses amid intense competition across generative artificial intelligence. The equity tape, however, is not trading on balance-sheet expansion. Across our index book, tech remains structurally pinned under dealer supply. QQQ sits at 743.60, parked below its 743.82 gamma flip. In short gamma, dealers are forced to sell into market weakness and buy into market strength, amplifying moves rather than cushioning them. Overhead resistance is defined by the 745 call wall, while downside protection drops toward the 730 put wall, with the tape pricing an expected move of plus or minus 1.38%. Broad equities show the exact same mechanical drag. SPY trades at 764.72, below its 766.91 gamma flip and caught between its 760 put wall and 770 call wall. Like the tech index, SPY sits in short gamma territory where dealer hedging adds fuel to intraday volatility rather than damping it down. IWM reflects the steepest structural pressure, trading at 279.56 beneath its 281.99 flip and leaning directly against its 278 put wall. Private capital commitments measure institutional balance sheets over years, but intraday index tape is governed by mechanical positioning. With dealers positioned short gamma across the board, headline liquidity injections do not change where the hedging lines sit. The levels define the boundary conditions, and what you click around them is entirely your own call.
