Eni and Repsol Weigh Outside Partners for Venezuelan Gas

European energy producers are exploring external backing for the offshore Perla field as Washington accelerates efforts to tap Venezuelan reserves.

European oil majors are exploring fresh capital partnerships to unlock one of Latin America's deepest offshore energy plays. Bloomberg reported that Eni and Repsol are actively weighing bringing outside investors into the giant Perla natural gas field located off Venezuela's coast. The strategic deliberations come against the backdrop of an aggressive push by the Trump administration to open up Venezuelan energy reserves. With global energy security remaining fragile across both crude and middle distillates, the Perla prospect offers significant gas deposits that European and regional markets are eager to formalize under clearer regulatory frameworks. Energy markets are already contending with heavy crosswinds. WTI crude futures printed at $91.11 per barrel, down 1.9% on the session, while Brent futures traded near $102.25. The pressure on crude follows a coordinated announcement where G7 economies authorized an emergency strategic release of up to 100 million barrels of crude and refined diesel to cushion supply bottlenecks. For Eni and Repsol, the challenge has never been the physical resource at Perla; it is the commercial and political architecture required to monetize it. Bringing in external partners dilutes capital expenditure and operational risk while Washington signals a willingness to engage Venezuelan supplies. However, any deal structure will face intense scrutiny over operational control, sanctions compliance, and long-term investment guarantees. Whether capital steps in immediately remains an open negotiation. The discussions show that despite persistent regional volatility, major producers are positioning for a broader reshuffling of global supply lines.
