Small Caps Defend the 277 Put Wall Under Short Gamma
IWM absorbed hawkish Fed minutes right at its 277 put wall, leaving index desks pinned in short gamma across the board into tomorrow.

The afternoon tape had to digest a hawkish reminder from the central bank, but dealer positioning dictated where the selling stopped. Benzinga reported that Federal Reserve officials backed the September rate hike and signaled another increase could arrive before year-end. That headline pushed yields higher, yet the tape stayed orderly within the boundaries drawn on the morning book.
IWM took the brunt of the pressure, falling 1.29% to close at 277.70. That slide took spot directly into its 277 put wall, testing the largest concentration of defensive positioning on the board. Because small caps remained locked in short gamma beneath their 281.24 flip, dealers spent the session pressing downside momentum rather than cushioning it. Despite the negative gamma regime, the 277 strike held through the closing bell, preventing the decline from overrunning the day's ±1.09% expected move.
Large-cap desks experienced a far quieter drift, though both finished on the wrong side of their structural line. SPY closed down 0.24% at 777.22, slipping just beneath its gamma flip at 777.32. That puts dealers in net short gamma heading into the next session, sandwiched between a 775 put wall and a 781 call wall against a tight ±0.65% expected move. QQQ told a matching story, giving up 0.25% to finish at 757.73, well below its 759.48 flip and holding above the 755 put wall against an expected move of ±0.9%.
With SPY, QQQ, and IWM all closing the bell inside short gamma regimes, dealers enter tomorrow stripped of their shock-absorbing mandate. When spot trades below the flip, street hedging tends to amplify intraday excursions rather than dampening them. Small caps proved that a major wall can still anchor the tape on the first test, but holding that 277 shelf becomes significantly more demanding if macro selling persists with dealers positioned to sell into weakness.
