The White House has instructed the Pentagon to draw up potential strike options against Iranian targets that could be executed before the midterm elections, The Atlantic reported on Wednesday, citing administration officials.
The report notes that Washington had previously refrained from direct military strikes against Iranian assets over recent weeks as campaign season intensified. However, officials indicated that military planning has accelerated, prompting renewed speculation over potential escalation in the region.
The geopolitical headline hit an equity tape that was already structurally vulnerable. Across our dealer book, major index positioning sits entirely in short gamma. When dealers are short gamma, they are forced to sell into weakness and buy into strength, acting as an accelerant rather than a shock absorber. Any sharp headline risk lands on a market with reduced padding beneath it.
SPY trades at 777.16, down 0.25% on the session and sitting well below its gamma flip at 787.86. The index is currently testing its 777 put wall, with an expected move of plus or minus 0.84%. QQQ sits at 756.92, also deeply below its 770.73 flip, pressed just above its own put wall at 755. Meanwhile, front-month crude futures trade at $89.01, with Brent hovering above $101.04.
Energy sensitivity and elevated benchmark yields have already left risk assets defensive throughout the day. If geopolitical headlines push crude higher, the short gamma regime ensures dealers will have to hedge dynamically against underlying momentum. With the put walls directly underneath spot on both major indexes, the room for passive absorption is thin.
