The afternoon wire carried plenty of technology noise, from TipRanks covering Microsoft rolling out a new AI model to CNBC noting massive prints in Micron and Nvidia. Yet when the 4:00 PM bell rang, the tape delivered a split verdict that headline percentages completely obscure. QQQ gained 0.49% to close at 751.27, but that print left it stranded beneath its 752.03 gamma flip. Despite the green day, tech ended the session trapped in short gamma.
That positioning matters because short gamma reverses dealer behavior. Above the flip, market makers act as shock absorbers, selling into rallies and buying dips to keep books neutral. Below 752.03, their mandate flips into pressing the tape: they must sell when price slides and buy when it climbs, widening realized swings. With QQQ pinned between its 750 put wall and 755 call wall, dealers spent the closing stretch amplifying volatility rather than damping it, leaving tomorrow's tape vulnerable to sharper breaks on any headline test.
SPY told the opposite story. The benchmark index gained 0.6% to close at 778.57, well clear of its 775.93 flip and safely inside its positive gamma regime. Dealers there remain net long gamma, supplying liquidity between the 770 put wall and the heavy 780 call wall overhead. As spot approached that 780 ceiling into the close, dealer selling kept the tape orderly and contained within the day's expected move of plus or minus 0.35%, with VIX easing 3.7% to 14.84.
Small caps also reclaimed structural ground. IWM gained 0.49% to close at 278.94, edging past its 278.37 flip to flip back into long gamma after spending earlier hours pinned lower. That leaves the 275 put wall and 281 call wall as the working boundaries for Friday's trade.
The divergence between SPY and QQQ sets up an asymmetric opening. SPY heads into Friday with dealer inventory cushioning moves under the 780 wall, while QQQ remains unhedged against rapid acceleration until price reclaims 752.03.
