Position size is normally worked out from the stop. Decide how much can be lost, measure the distance to the stop, and the size follows. Position sizing for same-day options covers that method. It leaves out a second distance: how far the trade can travel before it meets a wall.
Measuring room
Room is the distance from the entry to the nearest wall in the direction of the trade. For a long position it is the gap up to the call wall. For a short one it is the gap down to the put wall. Set beside the stop distance, it gives the shape of the trade: how much space it has to work against how much it can lose.
Why a wall bounds the trip
A wall is a strike with a heavy concentration of open interest, where dealer hedging is expected to be most active. Price can slow or stall there. It can also go straight through. What a wall is and is not sets out the limits of the idea. For sizing, the wall is a reasonable place to assume the easy part of the move ends.
How room changes the size
Room does not raise the risk budget. The amount that can be lost on a trade is set by the account and the rules, and a wide-open path is no reason to increase it.
What room does is tell the trader what that risk is buying. With little room, the full risk is being paid for a short trip. Some traders cut size on those trades. Others skip them. With ample room, the normal size stands. Size by the stop, then judge by the room whether the trade is worth its size.
Room against the expected move
A wall can be far away and still out of reach. If the wall sits beyond the day’s expected move, the room is on the map and may never be used in the session. The useful measure is the nearer of the two, the wall or the edge of the expected move. Expected move versus gamma walls compares them.
Where it breaks
Walls move. Option volume during the day can shift a wall closer or further, as in call wall migration, so room measured at entry can change while the trade is open. And a wall can give way, and then the room was never the limit it looked like. Room is a planning measurement taken from the current map. It has to be read again when the map changes.
Where NoVo shows it
Trader shows the call and put walls, the gamma flip and the expected move on SPY, QQQ and IWM, on a 5-minute cycle on Trader Pro and live on Trader Max. The distance from price to each is the room. NoVo shows the levels and places no trades.
