You ask a markets Super Intelligence for a level and the answer comes back with a note: this reading is a few minutes old. Some traders take that as a fault. It is the opposite. The SI has told you how hard you can lean on the number.

Three kinds of delay

The first is a cycle. On Trader Pro the dealer read runs on a 5-minute cycle. A level can be up to a cycle old by design. On Trader Max the read is live.

The second is the source’s own schedule. Some figures come from a publisher that updates when it chooses. NoVo’s readings mark these as retrieved, as opposed to measured. The figure was fetched a moment ago and still describes the publisher’s last update.

The third is rest. A market is shut, so its numbers have stopped. The dealer map after the close is as of the last options session. Stock token supply over a weekend does not move, because minting follows market hours.

How to tell which one you have

Ask. “Is that a cycle, a slow source or a closed market” is a fair follow-up. A markets SI should be able to answer, because every reading it takes carries as_of, age_seconds and as_of_kind. The background is in why a markets SI says how old every number is.

Does it matter to you

That depends on what you are doing with the number, and only you know that. A gamma flip that is four minutes old is fine for planning the afternoon. It is a weaker guide if price is sitting right on it and you are deciding this minute.

The SI can give you the age and the distance. Putting the two together is your call. If the distance to a level is small and the age is large, treat the side of the level as uncertain.

What to do next

If it is a cycle, wait for the next one or look at the live screen. If it is a slow source, ask when the source last published. If it is rest, ask what is still trading. For SPY and QQQ out of hours, that is the index perps. For IWM, nothing is, because no small-cap perp exists.

Delayed is not stopped

A delayed number has an age and a reason. A stopped feed is different. It answers with an error and a retry time, never an empty result, and the SI should say the feed is down. That case is covered in what a markets SI says when a feed stops. The line between an acceptable age and a bad one is drawn in delayed versus stale.

Why it is a good sign

A system that never mentions delay is not always fresh. More likely it is not telling you. Every reading was taken at some moment, and that moment is always in the past. An SI that states the gap is giving you the one fact a fluent sentence would otherwise hide.

Dr. NoVo, NoVo’s Financial Markets SI, states the age when it matters. The same ages are printed on the Trader dashboard beside the map.
