Amazon is looking to transfer roughly $8 billion worth of Nvidia artificial intelligence chips off its balance sheet, the Financial Times reported overnight, as the cloud giant works to offload heavy capital requirements tied to the ongoing AI buildout. The structure would shift the hardware to outside investors, relieving direct balance-sheet pressure while keeping the computing power accessible for its cloud infrastructure.
The push comes as mega-cap tech navigates mounting infrastructure spend, but tech positioning on my desk shows dealers are in no mood to act as shock absorbers. QQQ trades at 747.88, sitting directly below its 748.15 gamma flip. That puts tech dealers in short gamma territory, where hedging flow switches from dampening volatility to accelerating it. Every tick lower forces dealers to sell underlying delta into weakness, widening intraday swings rather than cushioning them.
The ceiling on the index is clearly defined at the 750 call wall, leaving spot trapped in a tight pocket just above the put structure. Downside protection remains deeply stepped down, with the QQQ put wall anchored at 730, leaving a wide air pocket if selling picks up. Skew on the tech contract sits elevated at 1.8, reflecting an options market that remains bid for out-of-the-money downside hedges even as front-month Nasdaq futures trade up 0.67% at 30,967.
Across the broader market, the contrast is stark. SPY spot trades at 767.93, sitting just above its own flip at 766.83 in positive gamma territory, where dealer hedging remains a stabilizing presence between the 765 put wall and 770 call wall. Tech, however, has lost that structural cushion. As hyperscalers scramble to engineer their capital expenditures and balance sheets around massive chip deployments, QQQ remains positioned on the wrong side of its zero line.
