SoftBank Group shares slid as much as 6.0% to ¥6,296 in Tokyo trading after executing the final $10 billion tranche of its follow-on commitment to OpenAI, Reuters and Investing.com reported. The transaction formally concludes a $30 billion funding program, lifting SoftBank's total stake in the artificial intelligence developer to roughly 13% across $64.6 billion invested. The payout follows an $11.1 billion high-yield bond sale carrying coupons between 8.625% and 9.75%, leaving equity markets pricing the immediate drag of borrowing costs against unlisted AI venture exposure.
The capital outlay lands on a tech complex where index dealers are already running tight cushions. On my equity desk, QQQ sits at 748.16, wedged directly under its 748.43 gamma flip with dealers positioned short gamma. When dealers are short gamma, they do not absorb swings; they press them, chasing downside by selling into declines and buying into rallies. The put wall on QQQ sits down at 730 against an upper call wall at 750, pricing an expected move of plus or minus 1.32% with skew elevated at 1.8.
That positioning leaves mega-cap tech vulnerable to leverage jitters even as broader index benchmarks attempt to stabilize. SPY trades at 767.98, hovering just above its own flip at 766.46 in long gamma, but QQQ's failure to clear 748.43 keeps the tech complex sensitive to credit headlines. High-yield financing at near-double-digit coupons to back unlisted AI equity highlights the balance-sheet friction now entering the trade. Whether tech breaks lower toward that 730 put wall or pushes through 750 depends on how dealers manage that negative gamma pocket, but the cushion overhead is thin.
