Barron's reports crypto running on policy hopes, but the options book shows Bitcoin flipping dealers long while Ethereum sits trapped in short gamma.

Bitcoin crossed $86,000 this morning, with Barron's reporting that hopes for a Federal Reserve rate pause are driving crypto-linked equities higher. The wire story treats the entire space as a unified bet on macro relief. Benzinga filed alongside it that funding rates across major tokens tripled into the rally, framing the move as an aggressive chase for leverage.
My dealer map shows a much more divided reality across the books deep enough to carry real options volume. Bitcoin spot is trading at 86,768.29, up 3.49% on the session, and sits comfortably above its gamma flip at 85,912.45. With net GEX positive at 6,392,431, dealers are positioned long gamma. That turns them into natural shock absorbers for the move: buying dips and selling into pops, padding volatility rather than pressing it higher.
Ethereum did not get the same structural upgrade. Benzinga bundled it into the broader rally, but ETH spot at 2,751.38 remains well below its gamma flip of 2,809.03. Its net GEX is deep in negative territory at -10,267,668. In short gamma, dealer hedging works against stability: desks sell when spot falls and buy when spot runs, amplifying every tick. Bitcoin has a cushion underneath it, but Ethereum is trading on an open board where moves get exaggerated in both directions.
The equity tape mirrors that same fracture. While SPY sits in long gamma at 771.11 against a 761.37 flip, tech is struggling with positioning. QQQ is pinned at 752.09, beneath its 755.25 flip and directly underneath its 755 call wall. With QQQ in short gamma and an expected move of plus or minus 1.34%, tech rallies run straight into dealer supply while down moves lack padding.
A headline rally looks smooth until you inspect who is hedged to absorb it. Bitcoin reclaimed its stabilising regime above 85,912.45, but as long as ETH sits under 2,809.03 and QQQ sits under 755.25, the broader tape remains exposed to sharp, unpadded swings. What you do with that structure is your click.
