QQQ Opens Pinned Below Its 756 Gamma Flip
Tech futures edge higher on fresh chip headlines, but dealer books leave QQQ and IWM trapped in short gamma heading into the bell.

The premarket tape is carrying a familiar tech bid. Barron's reported Bitcoin pushed above $86,000 on Fed pause hopes, while Seeking Alpha noted Morgan Stanley reinstated Nvidia as its top pick. CoinDesk also noted tech futures edged higher alongside crypto and gold as traders await the jobs report. Nasdaq futures sit up 1.23% at 31,140, yet the cash index options book tells a far more constrained story.
QQQ enters the session at 752.86, sitting squarely below its gamma flip at 756.11. That keeps dealers in short gamma, where their hedging flow amplifies moves rather than dampening them. With the call wall looming just overhead at 755 and the put wall down at 738, the expected move prices a ±1.38% range. Any premarket push into that 755 strike meets an options book positioned to press intraday volatility until price reclaims the flip.
Small caps face an even tighter structural ceiling. IWM trades at 283.31, also in short gamma beneath its 285.45 flip. Its call wall sits directly at 284, giving dealer hedging an immediate tripwire right at the open against a lower put wall at 278. SPY remains the lone shock absorber among the major index books, printing 771.76 comfortably above its 762.55 flip in long gamma, flanked by a 775 call wall and 760 put wall.
Across digital assets, crypto majors reflect a similar split. Bitcoin trades at 86,768, holding positive net GEX above its 85,912 flip. In contrast, Ethereum sits at 2,751.38 under a 2,809.03 flip with net GEX negative, leaving dealers positioned to accelerate dips until that line clears.
Headline optimism can lift futures before the open, but opening bells force dealers to trade the gamma on their books. With QQQ and IWM both opening beneath their flips, the immediate tape has dealer positioning working against easy upside extension.
