The Friday tape gave equity bulls the grind higher they wanted, but the ceiling was never a mystery to anyone watching dealer positioning. SPY finished the run right into overhead supply, printing 769.77 against an established 770 call wall. That left the index up 0.74% on the session, tucked neatly inside its daily expected move of plus or minus 0.44%.
All three major index products spent the entire afternoon parked above their gamma flips. When dealers are long gamma, they act as the market shock absorber, buying weakness and selling strength to keep intraday movement contained. SPY stayed above its 768.26 flip, while QQQ advanced to 749.7 against a 748.2 flip, guided higher as CNBC noted Nvidia marching toward a $6 trillion valuation and TipRanks tracked tech gains across the board. The Russell followed the same script, with IWM closing at 281.66 above its 280.15 flip, well short of its 284 call wall.
Volatility washed out accordingly. VIX dropped 6.59% down to 15.31 as weekend decay and dealer hedging bled premium out of the front contracts. With SPY pinned between its 764 put wall and the 770 call wall, the index never had the structural fuel to turn the session into a sustained breakout or a sharp retreat.
The crypto desk painted the opposite picture. Major digital assets failed to inherit the equity bid, with BTC slipping 0.28% to 84533.28 and holding negative net GEX below an 85873.91 flip. ETH similarly lagged, trading at 2669.56 beneath its 2774.14 flip, as Decrypt covered the shutdown of Ethereum Layer-2 network Blast. While index equities enjoyed the padding of positive dealer gamma, major crypto books remain hedged on the short side, where dealer positioning accelerates intraday swings rather than dampening them.
Heading into Monday, the equity line in the sand is plain. SPY enters the week right beneath 770, with long gamma guarding the tape down to 768.26. If price pushes through the call wall, dealers are forced to adjust their hedges higher; if it slips below the flip, the shock absorbers disappear.
