Tech Opens Below Its 748.56 Gamma Flip
QQQ and SPY start the session in short gamma territory while the wire digests headlines around Nvidia and semiconductor supply chains.

The morning tape is giving equity bulls very little cushion to lean on. QQQ opened at 748.04, sitting right beneath its gamma flip at 748.56. When spot slips under the flip, dealers shift from padding moves to pressing them, adding velocity to downside tape rather than absorbing it. SPY is caught in the exact same pocket, sitting at 768.93 against a gamma flip of 770.93 with an expected move of plus or minus 1.41%. Its nearest put wall sits down at 765, while the call wall is parked up at 772.
The headlines setting the backdrop are concentrated squarely on chipmakers and hyperscalers. TipRanks reported this morning that Elon Musk confirmed discussions with TSMC, sending Intel shares lower by 4% ahead of the bell. At the same time, Benzinga and CNBC highlighted heavy options interest around Nvidia, with Benzinga noting a same-day put buyer booking 29% gains and CNBC covering chatter around a potential milestone valuation. That options action mirrors what is showing up on the wider indexes: positioning is defensive, skew sits elevated at 3.4 on SPY, and front-month volatility index futures trade up 5.55% at 16.16.
Only small caps offer a counter-read on the equity board. IWM sits at 281.87, perched comfortably above its 281.22 gamma flip in long gamma territory. For small caps, dealers remain the shock absorber between a 278 put wall and a 286 call wall. When IWM holds long gamma while large-cap tech hovers below its flip, you get an uneven tape where broad selloffs struggle for clean index-wide synchronization.
Crypto is reflecting that same structural hesitation across its tracked majors. Bitcoin trades at $85,918, sitting well below its gamma flip at 86,794.91 with net GEX deeply negative at negative $15.16 million. Ethereum shows the identical posture: spot is at $2,711.29 beneath a gamma flip of 2,736.86, even as CoinDesk reported the SEC approved a 3x leveraged fund product for bitcoin and ether traders. News can frame sentiment, but dealer hedging dictates how far spot travels once the bell rings.
