Constellation Brands dropped 5.2% in after-hours trading to $109.95 following its quarterly earnings report, sliding from a regular session close of $116.02. The decline pushes the beverage maker to its lowest price since March 2020, shaving value from a market cap that entered the evening at $19.3 billion against a consensus EPS estimate of $3.62.
The broader equity market closed regular trading on a completely different tone. Benzinga reported that the S&P 500 rose 0.6% to reach its first record high since August, supported by strong third-quarter earnings revisions and retreating benchmark yields. MarketWatch reported that small caps and bitcoin failed to participate in the broader risk-on move, highlighting a selective tape where index gains were concentrated in mega-cap technology names.
That divergence between the broad market and individual corporate releases shows up clearly in the wider book. Across the headline indices, dealers spent the day hedged as stabilizing buyers rather than accelerators. In my own read of the tape, SPY closed at 779.09 with spot firmly in long gamma at 779.59, sitting above its 773.07 gamma flip with an expected move of plus or minus 0.59% and a call wall at 782. QQQ likewise sits in long gamma at 760 above its 753.03 flip, bounded by a 762 call wall and a 749 put wall. When an index sits above its flip, dealers absorb volatility by buying weakness and selling strength, which cushions the headline tape even as single-stock post-earnings drops slip through without that broad index cushion.
Constellation Brands trades into the overnight session well below its prior range, separated from the broader index shock absorbers that kept the headline benchmarks pinned near the highs.
