SPY Closes Deep in Long Gamma at 779.5

Equities finished the session insulated by positive dealer positioning while crypto majors slipped beneath their gamma flips.

The closing bell arrived with US equity indices locked firmly inside stabilizing dealer territory, even as the wire fretted over the quality of the broader rally. MarketWatch noted that small caps and bitcoin failed to participate, questioning the durability of broad risk appetite. Benzinga carried comments from David Rosenberg arguing Nvidia strength is masking pain beneath the surface, alongside warnings from Jamie Dimon that capital competition from AI could push borrowing rates higher. Yet the equity map barely flinched. SPY closed at 779.5 after printing 779.09 on our tape, up 0.55% on the session. That sits well north of its 772.98 gamma flip and safely beneath the 782 call wall, comfortably within the day's ±0.61% expected move. VIX dropped 3.29% to settle at 15.01. In positive dealer gamma, market makers act as natural shock absorbers, selling into strength and bidding dips to keep intraday volatility compressed. QQQ echoed the same insulation, finishing at 759.95 against a 752.99 flip and a 762 call wall, matching its ±0.89% expected band. Even IWM managed to defend its baseline structure. Despite Russell futures dropping 0.66% on the session to 2,849, cash IWM held at 281.2. That is just above its 280.35 flip and ahead of the 279 put wall, preserving a long gamma stance across all three benchmark indices into the close. The real divergence sat on the crypto book. While Benzinga noted bitcoin holding $85,000 during a flat session for large tokens, the positioning tape tells a sharper story. Major tokens crossed below their flips. BTC spot traded at 85627.04 against an 85844.59 flip, leaving dealers holding -5,328,698 net GEX. ETH followed a parallel path, changing hands at 2692.58 below its 2704.60 flip with -12,187,825 net GEX. When dealer gamma is negative, positioning stops buffering price and starts magnifying it. While equity desks go home with dealers actively suppressing intraday moves, the crypto majors head into the overnight session with dealer positioning tilted toward accelerating any sudden break.
