Retail commentators are arguing over arbitrary targets again, framing the asset around speculative round numbers. At the same time, CoinDesk reported that borrowers are using Bitcoin-backed loans to fund tuition and working capital rather than purely financing fresh crypto positions.
Those headlines sound compelling, but they do not tell you how the tape actually trades. My dealer book shows where the immediate gravity sits, and right now the structure is decidedly unpinned. Bitcoin trades at 82,775, sitting well below its gamma flip at 84,283. Net GEX is parked deep in negative territory at -$35.8 million, with max pain overhead at 84,000. When spot breaks below the flip and net gamma turns negative, dealers no longer act as shock absorbers. Instead of buying dips to balance their books, they are forced to sell into weakness to stay delta-hedged, actively accelerating moves lower.
Ethereum is locked in the exact same regime. CoinDesk reported that developer test runs for Ethereum's Glamsterdam upgrade approached 200 million gas per block, but the options book is entirely focused on current spot levels. ETH trades at 2,557, trapped below its 2,618 flip with net GEX sitting at -$5.3 million. Its max pain sits up at 2,650, leaving positioning tilted toward dealer-driven friction until price can reclaim those upper boundaries.
Among the other majors, Solana sits below its flip at 119.77 while spot trades at 114.79 with negative net GEX. The broader risk complex reflects this softness as well, with QQQ and IWM both positioned in short gamma regimes across the equity tape. With spot lingering under the zero-gamma threshold across crypto majors, volatility has room to expand until the daily expiry clears overhead open interest.
