The closing bell settled tech into the exact pocket dealers spend all afternoon dreading. QQQ finished Monday at 746.04, down 0.7% on the session and pinned nearly ten points below its gamma flip at 755.21. In short gamma, dealers do not cushion volatility; they press it. Every downtick forces mechanical selling to keep deltas flat, and every bounce requires rapid covering. With the put wall sitting down at 740 and skew elevated at 2, tech enters the overnight hours without the shock absorbers that protected the broader market.
TipRanks reported earlier that tech weakness pulled the index lower despite morning strength in Meta Platforms, which rallied on chatter surrounding its new Wonder AI model family. That headline pop faded into the afternoon tape as broader selling took over. While tech slipped, the S&P 500 managed a quiet afternoon. SPY closed at 778.10, off just 0.06% on the day, holding comfortably above its 775.92 flip. That kept the larger index in long gamma, where dealers remain buyers of dips and sellers of rips between the 774 put wall and the 784 call wall. The session stayed orderly inside SPY's expected move of 0.54%, proving that gravity still works when the book is padded.
Small caps carved out their own defensive perimeter. IWM closed at 277.90, down 0.37%, scraping just above its gamma flip at 277.29 and leaning right against its 277 put wall. Dealers kept that boundary intact, preserving long gamma by less than a dollar. Across the futures desk, ES settled near 7,856 while NQ gave up 0.74% to 30,877, mirroring the split under the cash hood. VIX gained 2.49% to close at 15.21, reflecting the selective bidding of front-month hedges.
Crypto offered zero relief to risk appetite. Bitcoin dropped 0.98% over the past 24 hours to trade near 82,985, sinking below its flip at 83,256.04 into negative net GEX territory alongside Ethereum, which slipped below its 2,529.54 threshold to 2,521.58. When both the crypto majors and QQQ lose their flips on the same afternoon, dealer positioning shifts from stabilizing to amplifying. For Tuesday's open, QQQ faces a heavy ceiling at the 755 call wall, while the 740 put wall remains the only structural shelf below.
